Complexity Level: Basic

Time Required: 5 to 10 minutes

Resources Required:

1. A one or two litters flat sided plastic bottle

2. An eight feet long and strong light twin

3. A hockey puck sized flat stone, you can also opt for a smaller stone

4. A slice of bread

5. A knife

Instructions:

1. First make a trap to catch the fish

This trap will be very easy to catch a number of small fishes like mosquito fish, minnows, guppies etc. To make the trap, you need to first cut off the bottom of the bottle with a sharp knife. Don’t remove the cap of the bottle, just leave it there. Cut ¼th inch diameter hole, approximately half way down the bottle. These holes are known as drain holes. They will drain the excess water out of the bottle preventing the fish from jumping out of the bottle. To tie the twin loops to the bottle make a ½ hole at the bottom edge of the bottle. You now need to tie a 20 inch long twin loop to the ½ inch holes made. The remaining twin loop needs to be tied to the center of the loop.

2. Position the trap properly

You usually find small fishes in shallow stream. These little fishes can be found around the shore of the stream where there is a steady current. Now, you need to locate a suitable place for fishing. Put a slice of bread towards the cap of the bottle and place it at the location. Place a stone inside the bottle to serve as weight for the bottle, preventing it from flowing away.

3. Direction of the trap

The bottle needs to be placed inside the stream bed. The cut bottom of the bottle needs to face upstream and water of the stream needs to fill and cover the bottle completely. The twin loop cord should lead to the shore in such a way that you do not cast your shadow on the bottle.

4. Catch the fish in the bottle now

Now, you need to wait till the fish nibble onto the bread. To attract the fish to the trap, you can place a small piece of bread outside the bottle. Once there are a number of small fishes nibbling onto the bread inside the bottle, swiftly pull the bottle from the stream. Make sure that you are very quick in pulling the bottom of the bottle out of the water. You’ve caught a number of tiny fishes in your bottle!
