Lesley Kime, a 35-year-old Australian woman, was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after her legs were temporarily paralyzed due to skinny jeans she was wearing. Doctors had to cut off the jeans in order to give her first aid.
The fashion world has never given heed to such a grave issue that has been leeching on human body for years now and this Aussie woman is the most recent example of how serious aftereffects of wearing skinny jeans could be. A research published in the journal Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry hasignited this decade-old debate highlighting the downsides of wearing skin-tight cloths.
Stress on body under external force due to tight clothing can lead to medical troubles. Take a look at some of the medical conditions skinny jeans can cause.
Compartment syndrome
The case of a 35-year-old Australian lady, in which she collapsed while walking and remained there for about an hour before she could drag herself to a more public place for help, doctors made a critical evaluation regarding her skinny jeans.
The lady was wearing very tight skinny jeans on that day, and unfortunately, she remained in a squatting position for hours because of her job. That led to a condition that doctors call compartment syndrome. Due to squatting, a compression between the biceps femoris tendon and fibular head causes obstruction in blood flow and damage to tissues.
As a result, she was left with a severe damage to two nerves in her lower legs including muscles. The doctors had to cut the jeans off as her calves and ankles were swollen. Luckily, she didn’t suffer a permanent damage.
Severe cystitis
Tight jeans can lead to a medical condition called cystitis characterized by inflammation in the bladder. The inflammation is usually caused by germs, and most often bacteria is the culprit. Wearing tight jeans makes it difficult for skin to breath, which was the case with the mother of three, who ended up in intense pain for weeks. The cause of her pain was suggested to be the skinny jeans she used to wear.
Wearing tight jeans leads to creation of a warm patch near your private parts, making it perfect for mushrooming of bacteria. The symptoms include intense pain in lower abdomen and blood in urine.
Unnecessary pressure on the bladder and pelvis
Another health hazard caused by tight jeans includes extreme pressure on the bladder and pelvic region. This causes a continuous pain similar to that of labor pain. A prolonged pressure on these parts may lead to an acute pain with burning sensation while urinating.
Exacerbated ingrown hair
Another downside of skinny jeans is that it can lead to exacerbate ingrown hair. According to dermatologists, skinny jeans or similar tight wear causes friction between jeans and skin. It adds pressure to hair follicles which are burrowed then. It leaves patient with unsightly splotches on skin. Also, moisture caused by sweating is trapped inside trousers, especially during summer season. A warm area with moister provides a conducive environment for germs and bacteria to thrive, which may cause skin allergies and infections.
Probably, other factors like body posture also play an important role in amplifying the stress caused by tight clothing. So, the fashion world can go back to normal business, but with a little care.
