California’s Senator Carole Migden is reported to have sponsored a bill to confer upon Zinfandel as California’s historic wine, taking into account the contribution of Zinfandel in boosting the wine trade in California. Facts provide that the bill is awaiting veto of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, failing which it will come into force on August 29.
The most obvious question that has puzzled the minds of wine makers of California is the selection of Zinfandel over other classic wines like Cabernet, Chardonnay and Merlot. The answer is given by yet another report in Azcentral that claims Zinfandel’s true origins to California and its capacity to stick to California despite of changing trends. With seven varieties of zinfandel, giving the most versatile flavor bouquet from jammy to spicy to the wine lovers, there is no doubt about the fact that it is giving huge yields and good money to the Californian wine trade.
The dominion of Zinfandel and its loyal fan following would definitely dispel all doubts about Zinfandel being the most deserving candidate for California’s historic wine. Well the word historic can strike the wine lovers here, as zinfandel’s true origin is not yet traced convincingly.
Ethically, the grape is not what it stands for. Fact provides that zinfandel is a red grape famous for its white wine. However, immaterial the fact may be it does affect the conferral of the wine as ‘historic’. I strongly feel that they should change the title to ‘official wine’, for giving recognition to the wine trade in California.
