Alcoholic ways to Lose weight and Gain weight

Loosing weight is all about burning more calories than we eat. Most of the people choose to prefer low-calorie alcoholic drinks when they go on diet. In fact drinking habits has more detrimental outcome than, if we look at the number of alcohol calories in it. To add on alcohol boost up the appetite and reduces testosterone level than reducing fat calories. This takes place after 24 hours of drinking.

The “beer belly” is caused by fat accumulated due to excess consumption of alcohol calories. The core result of alcohol is to reduce the amount of fat, still less than five percent of alcohol calories we drink are turned into fat.

A research conducted in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition [4], eight men were given two drinks of vodka and sugar-free lemonade. The time gap between consumption of two drinks was 30 minutes. Obese metabolism was calculated before and after consumption of drink. The content of calories was below 90 in each drink. After few hours of drinking vodka the complete body lipid oxidation declined to 73%.

Alcohol is converted into a substance called acetate instead of getting stored as fat. A quick rise in acetate slows down the fat loss and moreover blood levels of acetate become 2.5 times higher than normal after drinking vodka.

For example car engine uses fuel as the only source for its working but in the case of our body there are many components from where energy is extracted as carbohydrate, fat and protein. Our body uses its sources according to its availability. Our body tends to utilize whatever we provide it. Therefore when acetate level rises, our body reduces more acetate rather than fat.

Therefore the effects on fat metabolism after drink are:-
. Conversion of small amount of alcohol into fat
. Conversion of alcohol into acetate by liver
. The acetate spreads into the bloodstream and becomes the sources of fuel rather than fat.

The function of surplus alcohol and carbohydrates work in a parallel way. As excess of acetate replaces fat similarly excess of carbohydrate can also be converted into fat and is released as fuel. There is a probability of weight gain through any sort of diet.

What does appetite say…?

According to Canadian study it has been found that if alcohol is taken before the meal then it raises the calories to a greater amount than a carbohydrate –based drink. Therefore we can observe that amalgamation of alcohol and high calorie meal lead to calorific.

A research conducted in Denmark’s Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University proves when a group of men were allowed to eat as much as they can; they ate more when beer was serves rather than soft drink.

As discussed earlier excessive alcohol slower down fat loss, it also effect poorly in testosterone levels. It is more destructive when alcohol is taken after exercise. One of the factors of less muscle is effect of alcohol on testosterone for those who are chain drinker.

In international Journal of Obesity, a study published in November 2004 shows a comparison between two different diets for a period of three months. Both the diets contained 150 calories daily. One with 150 calories from white wine and other grape juice also with 150 calories. It was examined that weight loss in grape juice and white wine was 8.3 pounds and 10.4 pounds respectively.

To explain in simple words…..

Alcohol – rich meal acts in both ways of increasing metabolic rate as well as controls fat calories used for energy which more than high protein, carbohydrate or fat. Therefore occasional drinking is not going to hurt but healthy body does not accept alcohol as well as leaner.

A new feature has been included in the scenario about the alcoholic beverages which are now labeled with carbohydrate and calorie content. Low carb beer has also been included in it. The labels might have not been introduced in the market place but soon is going to be launched. It is good if the consumers are aware about the proportion of calorie content in hard drinks but what about the carbs?

Wine producers has already granted permission for the use of “heart healthy” labels for their product but still the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau who had strict regulation about such commodities are rather fine with the decision.

To mention a claim for low carb and no carb on alcohol are legal if they don’t mention it will help to lose weight, rather than simply labeling the wine as beneficiary for heart. But the young generation has a mind set that it loses weight.

Let’s measure the proportion of calories in alcohol!

The proportion of calories in pure alcohol is about 7 grams which equals to two times fattening through carbohydrates and protein. This is understandable that if loosing weight is a question then alcohol is not a good idea.

What research has to prove……?

Science didn’t prove that there is a link between alcohol consumption and gaining weight. As per some studies it has been proved that drinking beer may enlarge waist to hip ratio. One of the studies shows the female twins, if there is excess alcohol consumption then fat decreases. Moreover other research reflects that excessive drinking reduces fat on the other hand the risk of overweight is also found. There is no particular prediction about effects of alcohol but still some of the outcome is
. You gain weight if there is consumption of high calorie snacks while drinking.
. The chain drinker may gain weight if he consumes beer, wine or spirits.
. There is a chance of loosing weight if alcohol takes place of food.
. Genes are influenced by the way the body processes alcohol.

Secret of alcohol and carbs…

All the weight loss course need to stop drinking. The reason because the entire alcoholic drinks feeds you calories which are without nutrition. The destructive factor may be, you can loose the power of resolving the problem of loosing weight. Alcohol is high in calories which is 7 calories per gram almost near about fat (9 calories per gram) and more than carbs or protein (4 per gram). Some facts about alcohol and nutrition which people may argue about it.

Most of the calories come from alcohol as it contains calories.
. Alcohol is not a carbohydrate.

. Before fat, protein or carbs are processed, our body is certain to process alcohol. Therefore it is obvious to gain weight if there is excessive drinking.

. There are no carbohydrates in hard liquor as it is distilled there fore the consumption is high as in “Zero Carb” vodka and whiskey.

. The conversion of grapes into wine turns fruit sugar into alcohol but some portion remains. A 5 ounce glass of wine contains 110 calories, which is 5 grams of carbohydrates and 13 grams of alcohol. A 5 ounce glass of wine has same amount of alcohol and number of calories as in 12-ounce of light beer or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirit.

. The new label and the ad campaign which shows Low Carb Beers doesn’t mean its new in the market but it has less carbs. Those are the old light beers with new tag. For example; the Old Miller Lite has 96 calories and 3.2 grams of carbs in 12 ounces. Michelob Ultra consists of 96 calories and 2.6 grams of carbs. In compare to regular beer has 13 grams of carbs and 150 calories.

The fact is……

There is no such data which can prove that “low carb” is a symbol of low calorie and it helps to loose weight when it comes to beer, wine and other alcoholic drinks. The presence of calories in alcoholic drinks is because of alcohol has calories not carbs. The advertising which shows low carb beer and wine are best for weight loss program is misleading.

Specialist says…

Robert C. Atkins –

I recommend refraining from alcohol consumption on the diet. Whenever alcohol is taken it is the first to burn as fuel rather than fat. This shows that there is no weight loss.
Dr. Michael R. and Mary Dan Eades (protein power)

“Can alcohol be consumed on the Protein Power Plan?”

it can be taken unless and until there is a limitation of carbohydrates. Red wine (3 oz. or Miller Lite beer (12oz.) has 3 or 4 effective carbs but it depend on you how you take it in daily bases.
