Before acting in the film, Ali Zafar already had been a popular singer in Pakistan. With seven million copies of his music titles sold worldwide, Zafar got the role of a reporter in Tere Bin Laden, a spoof on terrorism and particularly on Osama Bin Laden. He was nominated for the best debut male actor award in Zee Cine Awards, the most promising newcomer male actor in Filmfare Awards, and also in the Star Screen Awards, 2011. The latter took place in Singapore on January 14, 2011, and Zafar did not win the award. The winners of the other two awards are yet to be announced.

Winner or not, Zafar has got his name listed as the first male actor from Pakistan who has been nominated for Bollywood acting awards. Before him, a few female performers have been nominated for some prestigious acting awards in Bollywood, e.g. Salma Agha was nominated for best actress Filmfare Award for her role in the 1982 movie Nikaah while Zeba Bakhtiar was nominated for best actress Filmfare Award for playing the heroine’s role in the 1991 film Henna.
