Etche co-op: Meeting the global demand for cassava food products

Food processing is improvising day-by-day and rare and “tough” foods are processed now a days. Rare food like cassava is recently in the news as Etche Co-operative Union has started a N100 million co-operative cassava-processing centre in Okehi, Nigeria. This processing center would focus on the value-added processing of cassava and strategic marketing of various intermediate and finished cassava products for local consumption and exporting the product. The Executive Director of the Directorate of Co-operative Development, Dr Joseph S. Jaja, also wants to provide gainful employment to the youths of the state.

Demands for cassava products are not only high in Nigeria but also in the European Economic Community, as cassava flour is in great demand in the bakery industry for the manufacture of non-wheat products. The other uses of cassava in the food industry are as a thickener, cooked as a starch, as a solidifier and a binding agent. Therefore, Nigerian farmer co-operative has insisted upon the proper tapping of this industrial product.

Cassava holds a wonderful future for the Nigerian economy and with the N100mn co-operative cassava-processing centre, it is sure to go great in the food industry sector and the demands of cassava food products throughout the European and American community is going to be met soon.

This perishable food product is now preserved for providing sufficient food to the 120mn Nigerians throughout the year.
