Fast food chains ready to reduce Trans fats, need no Govt. intervention

fast foodsGlobe and Mail has reported about the quick response of the fast food chains about reducing Trans fat oils in their daily menu offering. Though McDonalds and the recent one on KFC have their lessons for neglecting the FDA regulation, yet they claim that they are on their ways to develop healthier alternative to saturated oils, without making compromise in the texture and taste of foods.

To quote a statement regarding Burger King:

We have been evaluating low-trans-fat and trans-fat-free oils for about a year and a half. Our concern is [compromising] the flavor of the products.

Burger King and other fast food giants are restricted due to the ‘flavor’ factor and hence they have put-forth this case to the consumers for a compromising stance.

The compromise no doubt lies in giving the whole matter to the consumers by providing them with food-packaging labels, yet the arrangements doest not seem to suffice the consumers with Government and nutritional advocates coming-up with their own propagandas. The government on the other hand should stick to the monitoring job, letting the fast food chains develop their own formulas for healthy oils.

It is interesting to note that the vow of the fast food chains for this switchover is not without a condition and that is ‘no government intervention’. Concisely, it is high time that Government understands that fast food chains have to cater to both their nutritional and profit profile, along with the fact that fast food chains can never be Diet Parlors.
