Gadbad Ice-cream…Is there something missing in this ice cream? In Hindi Gadbad means…something missing. Well Mangalore makes up for that something missing in an ice cream, which itself is named gadbad, but ironically it stands complete in itself. The owner of the Ideal and Pabba, Prabhakar Kamath said:
It is a whole meal, not simply a dessert!
In Gadbad you have to explore the variety of flavors from a tall glass,filled with your favorite ice cream, fruits, nuts, jellies and your favorite topping. This ice cream is layered in the most skillful way by sandwiching ice creamm in between two layers of jelly, taking care that the jelly doesnot become a mishmash with the ice cream. this is then alternated with fruits and nuts and finishing it off with another layer of ice cream and topping. Gadbad is served in three major restaurants in Mangalore, namely Ideal Ice Cream Parlour, Hang Yo and Pabba’s.
This icecream had primarily originated in the Diana Hotel in Udipi. Well the original gadbad ice-cream in fruit, ice cream and nuts; but hotels have come up with their own innovations and MTR serves its own version of the Gadbad ice cream in packages. This layered cocktail is eaten as a mishmash as you need to go through all the flavors in a single spoon, but the layers are just to lure you to the sundae.
