Hi-tech Worm in Bacon…this time its healthy

pigletsIf you do not like seafood it is absolutely alright but there is a whole new way of getting the Omega3 fatty acids without having seafood at all. A technological breakthrough has come up with a genetic blend from Roundworm C. elegans to produce piglets with more amounts of Omega3 fatty acids. As per Dr. Jing Kang, the Harvard Medical School researcher, responsible for modifying Omega3 making gene into the making of a pig:

We all can use more omega-3 in our diet.

As per ‘all’ he meant that the application of the same genetic blend can be used in the cloning of cows and chickens. Well the Omega3 gene has run into other areas of biotechnology like farming, where Monsanto Co. of St. Louis and DuPont are moving towards making cooking oils with Omega-3 and also similar products.

As far all doubts are concerned as to the taste and smell, a reduction in fat would make it less flavorful and as per Kang:

There should be no difference, adding that, as far as he can tell, the pigs don’t smell fishy.

Though the new gene gave one-fifth of Omega3 fatty acids as compared to salmon, Kang assured that the percentage of Omega3 fatty acids can be increased in future. The interchange of nutrient to pigs is for the purpose of those who do not eat fish and for those who are pressing upon leaner variety of meats. This would facilitate for the daily dose of Omega3 fatty acids and also serve for curing Alzheimer and cardiac problems.
