US based designer is in India promoting the social cause- Save the Girl Child, and will be soon coming to Mumbai. The lady reveals her plans…
International designer- activist Sanjana Jon is currently in Delhi promoting a social cause close to her heart- “Save the Girl Child”, besides canvassing support for her brother Anand Jon, who is currently in the US jail for raping models. On her way to Patna, where she is going to be the showstopper for a friend’s fashion show, Sanjana reveals on the phone, “I love Mumbai so much and would soon be coming there to promote my cause.”
Elaborating her views on the cause, she says, “There is still a huge need in India to spread the awareness about saving a girl child and I am committed to the cause from the last 11 years.” Only last month, Jon brought Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete Rosete of Mexico on a ten day tour to India to promote this campaign. She has been bringing the pageants almost every year now as she thinks adding a glam quotient always works well in India, when it comes to spreading awareness. Her awareness drive mostly consists of visits to hospitals, interaction with school children and awareness walks. “On one hand Indians worship Goddess Shakti, yet incidents of female foeticide are on the rise in the country, both in rural and urban areas. In metros, where there is a lot of education, even there it is a problem,” explains Sanjana Jon. “It is necessary to propagate this cause to save girl child in rural areas as well as metros as girl child should not be considered a bane, but a boon. That is why we are trying to create the concept of celebrating the girl child. Every girl born is a cause of celebration. I want everyone to support and create this pledge as well,” she adds.
However, her mood immediately lights up at the mention of Bollywood and fashion. “I am planning a star studded fashion event soon in Mumbai, which would promulgate the theme“Celebrate the Girl Child”,” reveals Sanjana as she sees a lot of scope here. “Mumbai has a mass appeal, obviously because of the stars. If you do something here, the impact is thousand fold, besides, people in Mumbai are very nice and supportive,” she adds. And who she considers closest in Bollywood? “Of course, it has to be Salman bhai and his family. They have been ever so supportive of whatever I do. I shall always be indebted to Salman bhai. He will be the main attraction of all my events in Mumbai, in addition to Sonakshi, Malaika, in fact the whole Khan-dan,” chuckles Sanjana Jon.
Last year she rocked the ramp at Wills Lifestyle India fashion week by bringing the likes of actors, musicians, socialites and sportsmen under one roof. Everyone from Salman Khan, Sushmita Sen, Sajid Wajid, Ayan and Aman Ali to boxer Vijendar took the ramp by storm for her. Jon has also been busy fighting for justice in her brother’s case from a long time now. “I would not give up. I know Anand has been framed for the wrong reasons. He got 59 years of prison with a rape kit that was negative and after passing the lie detector test, nine years for an attempted kiss. Isn’t this gross miscarriage of justice?” says an upset Sanjana.
