McDonalds declares to chuck Trans fats, remains indecisive of alternative cooking oil

Following the efforts made by Wendy and KFC in the direction of a Trans fat cut in fast foods, here is yet another promise by McDonalds to reduce trans fats in its foods by 2008 in 6300 outlets across Europe. Facts provided report that this declaration to cut Trans fats is a follow-up of a similar claim, McDonalds had made in 2002 to chuck out Trans fats in some of its products like Chicken McNuggets and fries.

What adds a twist to the perspective of McDonalds attempt is apparently the freedom granted to McDonald’s product in labeling them as Trans fatty acid (TFA) free, despite 0.5g of TFA per serving, which McDonalds claim is not the case in the US.

While McDonalds has its strings attached concerning the reduction of Trans fats in Europe, fact remains that if it does not do anything to salvage the texture and flavor of its products, cooked in Trans fat free oil then it can be sure to lose out in the battle for Trans fats.

As McDonalds might introduce a salad menu, it can rest assured that like the UK, the salad menu will not work in either Europe or the US unless it changes the product profile of its ‘benchmark’ products as per the requirements of a Trans fat free food.
