More cups of coffee = Reduced risk of Gout

Java addicts are often advised to quit drinking more cups of their favorite brew citing health reasons. Now, they can shrug off the advice and can enjoy unlimited cups of coffee as Canadian scientists have found that four or more cups coffee may actually reduce the risk of having a painful attack of gout.

What is Gout?
According to niams, Gout is a painful condition that occurs when the bodily waste product uric acid is deposited as needle-like crystals in the joints and/or soft tissues. In the joints, these uric acid crystals cause inflammatory arthritis, which in turn leads to intermittent swelling, redness, heat, pain, and stiffness in the joints.

Reasons for a Gout attack: Genetics, over-weight, lead exposure, consumption of alcohol and medications that contain diuretics, niacin and levodopa.

Gout can be treated by taking anti-inflammatory pills, drinking plenty of water, exercise and by avoiding foods that are high in purines such as red meat, mushrooms, sardines, and asparagus.

The researchers found that those who drank more cups of coffee a day had lower uric acid level in the blood when compared to those who drank fewer cups. It was also found that the insulin levels in the blood were also low when the coffee consumption was high.

There is no reason why coffee consumption shouldn’t have an effect on blood uric acid levels – although this is the first study I’ve seen which comes to this conclusion.

says Dr Andrew Bamji, a consultant rheumatologist.

So, Let’s have another coffee-break now!
