Although the importance and benefits of including garlic in our food are many, there are scores of people who would prefer staying away from garlic. I am not talking about vampires but many celebrities who have chosen to ignore the many advantages of garlic over a single drawback that it has to offer. The sulfur-containing compounds such as thiosulfinates, sulfoxides and dithiins in garlic those are responsible for health benefits offered by garlic are also the root cause of the ill-famed garlic breath. It is for this reason a so-called war on garlic to ban it from the favorite Italian cuisine has been initiated by celebrities.

How strong is this dislike for garlic in celebrity circle can be made out by the fact that celebrities are not only having their favorite Italian foods incomplete without garlic but also are campaigning to persuade restaurants in Rome to cut out on garlic in their dishes. Carlo Rossella, news editor of Canale 5 and a prominent television executive has even gone a step ahead with his dislike and plans to launch of food guide that will recommend only food joints that do not include garlic in their dishes.

The top three ranking luxury hotels in Rome- the Eden, the Hassler and the Hilton and many other popular food joints in the city have cut out garlic from their dishes as well. Supporters of this ant-garlic campaign include the Italian CBI, Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio, the Environment Minister and leader of the Green Party, Luca Cordero Di Montezemolo, chairman of Fiat and head of Confindustria, actors Monica Bellucci and Raoul Bova among the many celebrities.

However, there are still many supporters of garlic who are willing to bear a bad breath rather than compromise with Italian food without garlic and how far this garlic war goes remains to be seen.
