Earlier it was thought that tomatoes guard against prostate cancer. But now according to a recent U.S study, the antioxidant lycopene present in tomato does not provide protection against prostate cancer.

The researchers of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle found a link between beta-carotene, an antioxidant related to lycopene. This finding shows an increased risk for prostate cancer.

According to previous studies – diet rich in lycopene protected against prostate cancer.

The scientists observed nearly – 28,000 men aged between 55 and 74 who have no historical background of prostate cancer. The men were screened for prostate cancer. They were asked to give blood sample for testing and were also asked few questions about their health, diet and what kind of lifestyle they lead in their life.

The scientists discovered that there is no major difference between the men who had prostate cancer and those who did not in relation to the concentration of lycopene in their bloodstream.
