In a sequel to the 10 great American Foods listed last year, MSNBC has dished out 10 more American foods for the year 2006. However, this time the difference as claimed by MSNBC is that the 10 American foods are attached to America with a great historical connotation. Let us see how:

1. Lobster Roll – Agreed that the style of the roll is all-American with cooked lobster meat sandwiched in a hot dog bun with mayonnaise, yet, the historical background of the places where this stuff is found are called as New England states, once inhabited by the English settlers.

2. Maple syrup – True to its origin from eastern Canada, especially Quebec, this American condiment is most widely used in crepes, pancakes, flans, ice creams and many other desserts.

3. Philly cheesesteak – This is the most controversial American food as far as origin is concerned. Philadelphian Pat Olivieri, except for the cheesy version that was later added by Cheese Wiz, originally made this chipped beef burger.

4. Gumbo – The gooey gumbo is not necessarily American as even East Indians relish this pottage with okra and prawns. Even the name is borrowed from the African natives with the basic ingredients taken from French. However, the variations in gumbo with seafood, chicken and greens can claim some originality.

5. Shrimp and Grits – This delicacy originates in Southern United States and is one accompaniment that goes among many other with cooked grits.

6. Frito Pie – The pie has its authenticity in the bag of chips under the label Frito. The best part of it lies in eating it without the plate in the packet, tossed with lots of green chilies, onions and grated cheese.

7. Wisconsin brats – As the name says this belongs to Wisconsin and the Americans are to be credited for keeping the standards alive.

8. Hawaiian plate lunch – Hawaiian plate lunch, is an Asian version, but it is the equivalent to the South American, meat in three plates. This lunch plate typically contains two scoops of rice, a scoop of macaroni salad and one kind of meat or fish.

9. Banana Split – This hot dessert is a part of a hot debate about origin. This dessert is claimed by Latrobe, Pa. As per other reports, David Strickler was given the credit of invention. Whatever it is the split banana is beautifully assorted with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup.

10. Burrito – Though, Burritos commercial look is bestowed by America, yet the one commonly made in Mexico is large and stuffed. The one in the US is a variation to the original burrito from Mexico with its name from Spanish diminutive of burro or donkey.
