The Islamic militants in Nigeria are strictly against the western education system and they want to eradicate it from the country. As a warning, the leader of Nigeria’s Islamic group, Boko Haram threatened to kill the teachers and destroy the schools that follow western education system to impart education. An earlier attack on a boarding school in July 6 confirmed the death of 42 students and one teacher. However, the Islamist group activist Abubakar Shekau denied their involvement in the massacre. He gave the message through a 15 minute long video released by the Islamic group where he opined that their religion does not believe in killing children and women.
Abubakar Shekau confirmed in the video that the teachers imparting western knowledge are in their hit list and will be killed soon. As per a report released by the United Nations Children’s Fund, seven teachers have been killed since June and some were brutally burnt alive by the Islamic militants.
The Islamic group has emphasized on making children read Quran by leaving the studies in Western template. They have warned about killing the teachers in front of their students. They have also threatened to burn the schools if Islamic education is not provided by the schools to the children. Though there have been talks about ceasefire deal, and it was believed that last week the government signed an agreement with Boko Haram’s second-in-command. However, Abubakar Shekau denied on any of the deals between the government and their organization. He has also cleared that they do not believe in having any deal with the non-believers and the Nigerian government.
Nigeria is the largest oil producer in Africa. The Nigerian government has sent thousands of military troops to fight Boko Haram yet remain unsuccessful. The Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan has declared emergency in the northeastern states ofAdamawa, Borno and Yobe.
Abu Zinnira, the spokesperson of the radical Islamist Sector has given a statement that few young vigilantes are against Boko Haram. These youths are dedicatedly working for the Nigerian government in the war against Boko Haram. He also vowed to fight back. An official record says that Boko Haram has murdered at least 1600 people during his terrorist activities since 2010. The Islamic militants need to understand that education is very important for the overall growth of human being and reading only Quran cannot make it possible. The Nigerian government is trying its level best to fight Boko Haram and finish his terror from the Nigerian education system.
