“Wild Idea” to extract coffee beans from Cassowary droppings

catseatFollowing the extraction of coffee beans from the excreta of the Luwak Cat, the “Wild Idea” experiment conducted by the General Manager of Sihereni Coffee Project, David Oromarie aims at extracting coffee beans from the droppings of a bird called as Cassowary. Cassowary is the second largest flightless bird in Australia. The coffee bean extraction is similar to that of Coffee Luwak, where the cherries, from the coffee plantation at Asaro, is fed to the cassowaries and the follow-up process is the natural fermentation of the beans in the bird’s stomach after which the seeds come out in the droppings of the bird. The seeds are sun-dried for two days, for the purpose of extraction of green beans, which are then roasted and grinded into coffee.

As per David the coffee will be targeted to International consumers and will be sold under the brand name “Muruk Coffee”, on the completion of taste and quality trials. Seherini coffee supplies coffee to Starbucks and is the biggest propagator of Cassowary preservation. Therefore it has based its new experiment on the bird’s droppings and the company’s logo also features a cassowary bird. The main aim of the coffee is to give quality products to its consumers and apart from that it also claims that Wild Idea is one such coffee that is produced by natural fermentation. But I would suggest David to introduce Jordan, Judah and Galilee to the Luwak Cat.
