It has been proved time and again that most of the results of the celebrity reality shows on television are the outcome of popular votes and less on the talents of the participants. ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ the popular dance contest on BBC1 is no exception to the rule.

The show received its latest jilt when the former EastEnders actor Letitia Dean was voted out of the contest while Matt Di Angelo whose performance saddened the judges retained his place in the contest on popular demand.

This contest has been dogged by controversy that results are being decided by the contestant’s fan following and to a much lesser extent on the dancer’s talent. Judges of the contest were bemused week after week when best dancers were waltzed off the contest but worst dancers stayed on for weeks.

Earlier Gabby Logan one of the superior dancers was voted out but Kate Garraway the worst dancer of the contest survived for weeks. This week Di Angelo’s samba and foxtrot got him 55 points 10 points short of Miss Dean but the EastEnder actor seemed to have a larger number of admirers than Miss Dean who ensured his position in the contest.

The producers of such contests are interested only in improving the popularity of these shows and therefore despite of protests by some that the larger audience is not the correct judge for the contests, popular voting will remain while true talent will take the back seat. It is after all revenue that matters and the rest is secondary.
