Shortly after returning from New Delhi, Mamata Banerjee headed to the hospital. The Chief Minister of West Bengal was manhandled by an unruly mob led by SFI activists in New Delhi. This followed killing of a SFI student leader in police custody in West Bengal.
The Chief Minister was admitted in a private clinic in Kolkata on Wednesday after she complained of pain and palpitation. The fiery leader was advised to rest until the time she recovers completely. Infact, the Chief Minister headed straight to the clinic from the airport. She was examined by a panel of doctors and they decided to admit her in the clinic.
This sudden decision of the Chief Minister to head straight to the hospital after arriving in Kolkata can be seen as a political message that she intends to convey to her opponents. The reaction was immediate and Trinamool Congress activists indulged in violence setting fire to properties belonging to CPI (M).
Mamata Banerjee had to face the ire of irritated Student Federation of India (SFI) activists who blocked her way when she was on way to Planning Commission. Her Finance Minister Amit Mitra too was manhandled subsequently and had to be admitted to AIIMS.
The incident has showcased a unique face of Indian politics. Earlier the Chief Minister had claimed that the death of the SFI student leader was an insignificant event and that such kind of incidents occur. The retaliatory reaction from the firebrand student organization supported by CPI (M) was much in place as the organization is known to react in similar manner to nay such event.
To add fuel to the fire, Mamata Banerjee decide to head to the Planning Commission from the front gate knowing well that a crowd comprising SFI activists was waiting to block her way. Infact, Delhi police claims that she ignored their advice and headed to the planning commission office from the VIP gate.
The Chief Minister blamed the Delhi police instead for not providing her adequate protection while she was being manhandled. She also dismissed the claims of the police that she was advised on not to use the VIP gate.
The political mileage that both Trinamool Congress and CPI (M) have been trying to leverage from the death of student leader is a sad reminder of the fact that our political standards have fallen to all time low. No political party despite its ideologies and ethics leaves any stone unturned to derive benefits from human tragedy.
This incident is a reminder of the fact that our politics has come to such low standard that death of a person is being used to attract the attention of the voters. The need of the hour is to promote social harmony and desist from any such action that hurts human sentiments.
Meanwhile, the voter is watching with interest the turn of events that are taking place with each passing day. One only wonders when things will work out in favour of the voter and they will be able to realize the real benefit of living in the biggest democracy of the world.
