Android Kit Kat is the next version of Google’s mobile operating system

So it’s sort of official now folks. The next version of the android operating system will certainly not be dubbed android 5.0 and it certainly will continue the tradition of being named after sugary treats. If rumors surrounding the release of Google’s open source operating system update are to be believed, then the latest version of Android is going to be called Android Kit Kat 4.4.

Google accidentally let the new OS update go public is a new video revealing the Nexus 5. However, not too much is known about the update just yet and everything we know about it so far is at best, just a rumor. But if rumors are to be believed, then Google may launch the new update as soon as October. According to the company’s Facebook page for Germany, Android 4.4 Kit Kat has Google partnering up with Nestle for the christening of the new OS and the unusual name appears to be pretty much official since Sundar Pichai, Android’s top guy, has tweeted a picture confirming the name with an image on twitter and Google+.

So far, the next version of Android was being dubbed Key Lime Pie though that apparently will not be the case. To celebrate the new partnership, Nestle is apparently building a whole new website and will even be offering around 50 million Android-themed limited edition Kit Kat bars in 19 markets around the world very soon.

Speculation suggests that these bars will be offered in the Middle East, Canada, UK and US only. Also, using one of these special bars will enable people to enter contests that would give them the chance to win the new Nexus 7 tablet among other special prizes.

Google have named all their OS versions after sugary treats and in alphabetical order which meant that after Android Cupcake we got versions named Android Donut, Android Eclair, Android Froyo, Android Gingerbread, Android Honeycomb, Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Android Jelly Bean. If Kit Kat is what the next version of the OS would be called, it would certainly make sense though many would be disappointed that the name Key Lime Pie was discarded to accommodate a marketing deal.

To celebrate the pending arrival of the new OS version, the famed Android statues in front of the company headquarters in Mountain View, California have been joined by a giant Android robot statue shaped like a Kit Kat.
