Angelina Jolie visits Refugee camp in India

Angelina Jolie and her Cambodian born five-year-old son Maddox visited camps for Afghan and Myanmar refugees in New Delhi. Jolie has taken a break from shooting in India to meet refugees. She talked to Sikhs who had been pushed out from Afghanistan by the Taliban. The star toured the refugee camp as part of her role as goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

She also met India’s Junior Foreign Minister Anand Sharma and she praised India’s stand towards refugees. She was quite impressed and after a long discussion of 85 minutes, said:

She said:

The wonderful thing that I have learned since I have been in India is there are many needs for your own people and yet you have all been so gracious and been so open to many, many refugees over the years.

According to the UNHCR India is giving shelter to almost 160,000 refugees, mostly from Sri Lanka and China.

Jolie and her son listened to a performance of religious music played by Afghan Sikh kids and visited the small home of a woman with three children whose husband had been arrested in Myanmar.

Mr. Sharma said:

We discussed the Indian tradition and Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of peace and non-violence, which continue to be very much relevant even today.

Angelina Jolie is filming The Mighty Heart, in which she plays the role of wife of the Wall Street Journal reporter whose kidnap and brutal murder shocked the world.
