Animals Abused, Others Entertained

Going through the newspaper the other day, I came across some sad news about a 12-year-old chimpanzee that had been evacuated from a zoo in Lebanon because people there had got him addicted to SMOKING.

“A 12-year-old chimpanzee is heading to a sanctuary in Brazil after animal rights workers discovered him smoking cigarettes to entertain visitors at a Lebanese zoo. Omega, who weighs around 60 kilograms, has never climbed a tree or seen other chimpanzees and has a troubling smoking habit he maintained from picking up cigarettes that visitors threw into his cage. Organizers of Omega’s evacuation say it marks the first time a chimpanzee has been rescued in Lebanon, a country with virtually no animal rights protection laws.”- http://healthznews.com/

Here you can watch the video of the poor chimp smoking cigarettes.

This is the kind of video that leaves me speechless. I seriously do not know what to say when I see fully mature adults abusing an animal for their own entertainment… Upon reading such news, I think: Some humans are no better than animals, they are definitely not any smarter, nor better equipped with ethics… actually, come to think of it; I know for sure that some animals are more faithful and respectful than some humans; ones like those responsible for supposedly “taking care” of the chimp, the visitors who cheered for him as he smoked, and anyone who was entertained by this…

I am however glad that some people still have some goodness in their hearts to put some effort and have this chimpanzee moved to a hopefully better environment, with better people, and some proper health care.
