Ben and Jerry’s switches to ‘Cage-free’ eggs, scoops some frozen ethics

Ice cream maker Ben and Jerry’s is reported to be the first National food manufacturer to have switched over to cage-free eggs, carrying the label ‘Certified Humane’. Apparently, the Company has taken the decision to move to cage-free eggs after a meeting with the Humane Society of the United States. Facts provide that the Company will take four years to implement this decision, as it requires ample supply of cage-free eggs to what it emphasizes is required to ‘set-up its logistics’.

Doubtless of the fact that Ben and Jerry is doing business on the line of ethics, it is equally indelible that cage-free birds are under similar treatment as their caged-cousins. Therefore, if Ben and Jerry really want to be ethical manufacturers for a group of ethical eaters then it had better watch-out the supplier of the so-called ‘cage-free’ eggs.

Moreover, Ben and Jerry might be too sure of the enhancement of flavors in the ice cream with the addition of cage-free eggs. Facts provide that ‘cage-free’ birds in the true sense of term are fatty, have heavier whites and yolks and hence are ‘up’ in flavor.

The flavor-verdict being based on organic-feed and stress-free movement of birds, would give enough clue to Ben and Jerry and ethical eaters about the use of ‘cage-free’ eggs.
