Bill proposed to invest some new powers with the FDA

A U.S. Senate bill that is up for providing more powers to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its dealings with the pharmaceutical industry is being both criticized and praised by the health experts.

The bill which was approved in a 93-1 vote is directed to restore consumer confidence to the regulation system. The people have lost faith in the regulation system due to the increasing recalls. Under this Senate bill, the FDA can mark some mandatory changes in drug labels, order studies on drugs already available and even remove drugs considered dangerous from the market. It also provides FDA with the power to fine companies up to $2 million, in case of any inconveniences or improper conduct.

Under the same bill, FDA can also monitor drugs after they have reached the market. The bill also meets a number of recommendations made by the National Academy of Sciences. But many people still think that the bill and new powers invested in FDA would hardly bring a change in the present conditions. However, some drug manufacturers are also in favor of the new provisions.
