Revolutionary changes in leather tanning in the world are seemingly possible by using steam in place of water to make zero wastewater pollution from tanneries— A beginning of Dr.S.Awasthi from India who is CEO of SPV for Common Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility and CETPs at Unnao striving to avoid water and use thermodynamically controlled steam for leather processing.

The effluent carrying drains being converted into nice pre-treatment systems in every tannery clubbed with more revised PETPs of member units connected to CETP:

Technology development of a Triple-Energy system for evaporation of salt water in the tanneries.

CETP Banthar at UPSIDC Leather Tech Park at Banthar Unnao, U.P. has really been amongst the most efficient and economical and well managed plants in the leather world based on own survey made around in the leather tanneries and is doing novel services to the society as under: The section 25 Company is also assisting the students since inception in fulfilling their thesis in the concerned subjects of environmental management and pollution control in leather industries and has been facilitating/conducting various training programmes also with national and international bodies like UNCTAD and WWF.

1-Three stage effluent treatment at CETP including tertiary polishing treatment

2-We have observed that country’s environmental policies are requiring immediate brain storming which are lawfully forcing million of tonnes of pollution in river bodies as every one is talking about concentration in mg/l in water bodies/rivers but no one is thinking total pollution load.

3-These is need of improving existing tanning technologies and to search possibilities to process leather with the help of steam in place of water.

4-We must explore alternative bio-chemicals for leather tanning in place of Chromium.

5-We must find bio-salts in place of Common salt for raw hides’ preservation

Sustainable existence of tanning industry is must for the country like India failing which disposal of millions of raw hides and skins every day would leave no place to put live on earth. A Tannery makes these skins and hides a value added air-conditioned material which is used today house-to-house and is providing employment to the weaker section of the society in plenty. No doubt its pollution problem has been tackled if the planned leather parks equipped with CETP and Solid waste management Systems are planned.

6-We are the first company in the country for inventing technology and going for setting up fleshing to oil and energy project with Dutch assistance with a Dutch Company at our SPV for Secured Landfill Project also existing at Banthar only to make fleshing waste a value added material ready to even export in European Market making it a CDM project to also earn carbon credits.

7- Undersigned has also submitted its own research for utilization of so-called Hazardous Solid waste from ETPs/CETPs of tanneries and other similar industries in the major road like National Highway construction using it as filler material in between stone boulders as construction pattern of NH is even better than landfill sites as far as the matter of earth compaction and clay quality is concerned. Certain small kms of NH can consume waste of last 20 years from any Landfill site thus saving the country’s precious land for other uses necessary to prevent human extinction.

8- Undersigned on behalf of CETP Banthar from its section-25 company has submitted dreamed technologies to CLE’s National Vice-Chairman to be submitted to CSIR,GOI for requesting them to get the possibility of such technologies implemented which would prevent pollution from tanning industry at source and thus leaving this sector as Eco-friendly and pride of our nation. These are summarized as under which are like intellectual property rights of Dr.S.Awasthi:

1- Development of bio-preservatives in the form of injections instead of salt.

2- BIPCC dreams to use steam for processing of leather at many stages instead of free flow of water.

3- BIPCC also dreams Thermodynmically controlled chemical processes along-with steam-pressures to penetrate chemicals and process hides Eco-friendly.

4- Elimination of lime and sulphide completely from the process

5-Searching economically viable salt-free pickling techniques.

Another issue has emerged in my mind when CPCB/SPCBs are really talking mathmatical numbers of BOD/COD limits irrespective of percentage performance of ETPs/CETP and hon’ble courts are following the same guidelines as fed by CPCB/SPCBs. This issue has been added into the following mail making it now as 8 point agenda and the point is scientifically proven and could bring again India as a most promising green country before the world if the suggestion is persuaded from top level and debate is done without prejudice with open, sincere and honest mindset. I am openly ready to debate at any platform. The Point is that world is rushing behind the compliance concentration limits for effluent discharge into rivers and water bodies whose bed is ultimately pervious and porous earth and not a plastic sheet. What is meant to say is that today every industry is adding significant quantity may be in millions of KGs in our country alone in Toto every day into waste-water as coagulant and flocculent to bring effluent’s COD/BOD and SS well within the limits of river standards i.e. SS<100 mg/l, BOD<250 mg/l and BOD<30 mg/l. These chemicals ultimately going to underground water either through river bed directly or through solid waste into the environment. Did the scientist ever thought for total pollution load being knowingly increased to control one pollution we are addition another pollutant as after all PAC, Alum, Ferrous Sulphate, Polyelectrolytes, Lime etc etc these are all the chemicals which have many acids and inherent toxic ions which are making our sub-soil water toxic day by day due compliance of our laws being followed by every one every country as sky is falling story.

Undersigned wants to urge upon all these scientists of the world through CLE to please revise parameters and fix the parameters in terms of percentage-performance-efficiencies of ETPs/CETPs based on inlet and outlet quality of ETPs/CETPs which could be obtained from fully environment friendly biological treatment technologies like ASP and UASB in ETPs. No doubt there could be more R&D on engineered bacteria’s which can enhance metabolic process and thus effluent treatment under the CSIR leadership.

Thanks & Best Regards
