Congress foresees the deteriorating law and problem in Uttar Pradesh as a political opportunity

Uttar Pradesh government has come under severe criticism after the murder of a police officer in the state. Congress has alleged that the law and order situation is deteriorating in the state and has demanded a CBI probe into the incident.

Rashid Alvi was critical in his criticism of the SP government in the state. In a hard-hitting statement, Rashid Alvi pointed out that the law and order situation in the state has gone from bad to worse. He pointed out that not much can be expected in a state in which a high rank police officer is killed and a minister in the government is blamed for the same. Rashid Alvi was pointing to the involvement of controversial leader Raja Bahiya who has always grabbed attention of the media for wrong reasons.

Rashid Alvi infact pointed out that when a serving police officer of the rank of DSP can be killed, nothing much can be expected by the common man, when it comes to securing their lives. The archrival of SP, the BSP too found this an occasion appropriate to make some noises. BSP has favored the imposition of President rule in the state citing law and order problem.

Congress meanwhile has decided to keep itself away from all potential controversies and has pointed out that imposition of President rule in the state is the exclusive right of the governor and the party has nothing much to say in this regard.

This soft stand adopted by the Congress is seen as an effort to garner support from the SP for the coming Lok Sabha elections in 2014. SP is an ally of the ruling UPA in the center and the party does not wish to annoy its potential partner owing to the increasing challenges the government is facing these days.

Rashid Alvi however tried to maintain a balance in his approach. This is amply clear from his carefully drafted words in which he pointed out that the state government should be sensitive to the needs of the common man and should take steps to ensure that such an incident does not occur in future.

The situation in Pratapgarh meanwhile remains tense and a lage contingent of police has been deployed in the area to prevent further deterioration in law and order. The killing of the DSP happened on Saturday as the officer headed to Pratapgarh to enquire into an incident in which a village head was killed.

Meanwhile Parvin Azad the wife of slain DSP has demanded a high-level enquiry into the incident. Akhilesh Yadav, the Chief Minister of UP has ordered an enquiry by CBI into the incident, thus silencing his critics who were making noises over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The state has always been in the news for wrong reasons and the killing of the DSP will only add to this confusion. Much needs to be done to improve the situation in the state and everyone needs to realize that the vicious cycle of violence will only make things difficult for them.
