Twitter is a platform for many to voice their views on several subjects, religion included. However, there are times when the religious (or anti-religious) tweets made by these celebrities tend to irk the general public who are quick to retort with backlashes. Here are some controversial religious tweets made by famous celebrities around the world which managed to create a huge furor on Twitter and other online platforms.

Donald Trump has been very vocal about his views on many subjects including Muslims, Islam and the situation in the Middle East. He has never shied away from the controversies his tweets about these subjects created as well. One of his more outrageous tweets includes:
“When will President Obama issue the words RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM? He can’t say it, and unless he will, the problem will not be solved!”
He has also time and again tweeted the necessity to maintain surveillance of all Muslims in the U.S. as well as stop the inflow of immigrants into the country. One such tweet pertaining to this is:
“We must defeat Islamic terrorism & have surveillance, including a watch list, to protect America.”
Natalie Tran

An atheist, Natalie Train came under the ire of the online community when she decided to talk about (or against) religion following the Charli Hebdo tragedy. Her tweet read:
“Strapping bombs to children …. I’ve tried to remain indifferent towards religion but it’s getting incredibly hard to remain that way”
Her tweet created an instant backlash with many accusing her of singling out Islam and Islamophobia. Tran was quick to reply that she had not mentioned any particular religion in her tweet. But the damage had already been done.
Richard Dawkins

Renowned atheist, biologist and author Richard Dawkins invited controversy when he tweeted about how the Texas teen Ahmed Mohamed who had been arrested by the police for allegedly bringing what looked like a homemade bomb to school (the bomb was in fact a clock Ahmed Mohamed had made himself) might have taken wrongful credit for the clock and how he might have actually wanted to be arrested by the police.
That’s not all. Dawkins has time and again tweeted some rather insensitive remarks targeting religions around the world. Some of these include:
“Are you a woman bored with life in UK? Start a new life in our Caliphate as a SLAVE. If you change your mind, you can have a free beheading.”
His tweets have created so many controversies that he was disinvited to public events owing to his offensive opinions.
Ricky Gervais

Another atheist who has come under public scrutiny for his insensitive religious tweets, Ricky Gervais recently came under the scanner when he replied to a tweet about the death of another atheist Christopher Hitchen. Gervais’s request to change for the better of the world was met with a volley of abuse from the user who had posted the original tweet. The user went on to tweet:
‘Atheism is poison, may God have mercy on your soul before he dropkicks you into HELL.’
Hugh Laurie

Renowned atheist Hugh Laurie also created a controversy with his anti-religious tweet stating,
‘Yes I suppose it’s odd that atheists sometimes say Jesus, and Oh My God. But odder than the religious saying “let’s be reasonable”?’.
That he could say religion and reason were incompatible was more than enough to create a backlash in the Twitter world.
Rishi Kapoor

Famous Bollywood actor was very vocal about his stance against the beef ban placed in Maharashtra owing to religious sentiments. The actor tweeted,
‘I am angry. Why do you equate food with religion? I am a beef eating Hindu. Does that mean I am less God fearing then a non eater? Think!! Aapko naheen khaana beef/pork mat khao. Ultimately your Karma counts not fuckn dictates by bigots. Karo Apna kiddos. Karm achche hon bas! Ye pandit maulvi sab chodo! Karo dil ki baat. Man ki baat. Ban on food? Unheard of by Idiots!!! Politics!!’
His tweet enraged politicians in the state who started abusing him on his Twitter handle. Rishi Kapoor was quick to send out a fitting reply to silence the haters.
‘My mantra? Live and let live!!!! Please don’t get me wrong I do not advocate killing of animals I am against this sh*t of double standards of politicians to suit themselves. By the way I love my Pork Chops too like a lot of my muslim friends who have a likewise thinking Laugh when you equate food with religion’.
Many celebrities have constantly come under the scanner for their insensitive remarks on religion. These celebrities however, do not refrain from voicing out their views irrespective of the backlash they receive for the same.
