The name “INTERNET” and its exciting and fascinating features are well known.Internet search engines like yahoo,google etc provide access to any sort of information with a click of a button.For grownups,it is a source of important facts and data where as for teenagers,it provide online games,chatrooms etc.The long familiar websites such as orkut and facebook are very popular among juveniles.
But,we know that every coin has two sides.Internet has several advantages and at the same time has incurred with innumerable disadvantages too.The most heinous act done on the internet is CYBER CRIME-illegal activity committed on internet.Computers today are being misused for illegal activities like e-mail espionage,credit card frauds,spams,software piracy and so on.It is the most dreadful act and it is almost difficult to arrest the convict because of the anonymity feature of internet.
Cyber crime can be categorized into following types:
(a)Cyber crime against person:
In this,some unknown e-mails are sent,on random basis,to people with insecure links which downloads the virus on one’s computer with a click and it becomes easy for the intruder to gain access to his or her confidential details.In order to entice teenagers,they send some malicious pornographic videos and images which also downloads infected computer viruses and worms.
A minor girl in Ahmedabad was lured to a private place through cyberchat by a man,who along with his friends,tried to attempt rape on her but fortunately she was rescued by the people from vicinity areas.
(b)Cyber crime against property:
In this,computer hackers have tried to access the information of many prestigious companies by enervating its security code.Also on paying bills through credit cards,cyberpunks can easily decode the security number of one’s card and can transfer the wealth into their own accounts.
A Mumbai-based upstart engineering company lost confidential information and large amount of money in the business when the rival company, an industry major, stole the technical database from their computers with the help of a corporate cyberspy.
(c)Cyber crime against country:
International terrorist groups remain in contact with one another through internet.They have stopped following the traditional ways of terrorism and have indulged in cyber crimes,that is,they are accomplishing their inhumane act of terrorism by the means of internet and computer.
The crime rates on internet are increasing rapidly and drastically in India.On seeing this,the Indian government had implemented its first cyber law in 2000,the information technology act.This act provides the facility that the Indian force can raid or arrest any person,who has indulged in cyber crime,without any warrant or notice.The evidence or proof in cyber crime is usually the perpetrator’s computer and software which he or she is using for stealing information.
The students should be alert and careful from such criminals and they should not respond or chat with any anonymous person.Because sometimes these intruders hack their computers allegedly and then they use it as a weapon for carrying out their illicit activities.
