A study was conducted to find the long-term effects of low-carb and high protein diets on 42,000 women in the Uppsala region north of Stockholm over a period of 12 years. Researchers found that people who adopted this diet were at a risk of premature deaths due to cardio-vascular diseases.

During the 12-year period over 592 women died, mainly due to cancer or cardiovascular disease. The Atkins plan and similar diet programs suggest even lower intake of carbohydrates and higher protein intake than that adopted by the 10 per cent group of women in the current survey. Women generally adopt these kind of diets as a quick-fix solution to lose weight and in the process may end up risking their lives.

Since high protein foods are rich in saturated fat and are linked with high cholesterol, the chances of developing heart diseases are more.
According to webmd, the other health problems that can be caused by low-carb, high protein diets are: Kidney failure, Osteoporosis and kidney stones, Cancer, and Unhealthy metabolic state (ketosis).
