Don Imus in deep ‘racial’ trouble

John Donald Imus, an American radio talk show host, best known for his sarcasm and harsh language, is in deep trouble, very much for his language, this time, having racial overtones.

Imus took a dig at Rutgers University women’s basketball team, last Wednesday, the day after they lost the NCAA women’s title to Tennessee. He told the radio listeners, ‘That’s some rough girls from Rutgers.’ He went on and continued speaking that these girls got tattoos. He further said, ‘That’s some nappy-headed hos there.’ MSNBC and CBS Radio are suspending Don Imus for two weeks. The suspensions start April 16

Civil Rights leader Al Sharpton’s told a radio show this Monday that there was ‘no excuse” for his remark. He thought the apology was not enough and Imus must get fired. He felt that a lot of the language and gangster rap on the radio have serious societal implications.

The National Association of Black Journalists has condemned Imus’s remarks. Brian Monroe, the group’s president, said Imus and his sidekicks have a long history of making crude racial and sexual comments.

Imus, in his possibly weak defense said, “I’m not thinking it’s a racial insult that’s being uttered at somebody at the time. It’s in the process of trying to rap and be funny.”

Imus started as a radio disc jockey in 1968 at KXOA in California. His on-air pranks, such as calling up a restaurant and ordering 1200 hamburgers, made his show immensely popular and boosted ratings.
