EU economic moves and Security Council votes:

The recently leaked information regarding the National Security Agency of US spying on the United Nations has given rise to wild speculations. This is completely against the agreement that UN and USA had between them. According to reports the NSA has been prying on the International Atomic Energy Agency of the UN along with collecting information about the economic moves of EU and the Security Council votes. The reports published by Der Spiegel, the famous German news magazine point out how the US has breached all previous agreements by acting this way. No wonder the UN decided to question US authorities about the allegations.

The report published in Der Spiegel has accused National Security Agency of USA for hacking the communication system of UN and listening to the conversations between diplomats. The magazine has also claimed that NSA is especially interested in the interactions between EU diplomats who are currently posted in New York and desperate for more substantial information. Funnily, while spying on the UN, the NSA stumbled across the Chinese intelligence agency that too was secretly collecting video conference information. As a next move the NSA started spying on the Chinese for getting more core data and info.

The agreement between USA and UN clearly states that the American intelligence agencies cannot collect information secretly or eavesdrop on UN’s private diplomatic conversations. According to this agreement whatever NSA has done is illegal. The NSA spies have nicknamed EU embassy as ‘apalachee’ and the Washington EU embassy is called ‘magothy’. The question is how much the NSA has got to know and what they are planning to do with the information they have got. Speculations are also being made about what other International diplomatic organizations are being monitored by NSA. The spokesperson for UN, Mr. Farhan Haq, has told the press that he will be speaking to the appropriate authorities to discuss the matter.

The US is trying to stick to their ground that whatever they have been doing is to control terrorism and the threats of it. Previously US Secretary of State had asked for intimate information about Ban Ki-Moon, the secretary general of UN. The interest of US in EU and UN matters is nothing new and they have been conducting spying expeditions for decades. But as Farhan Haq has pointed out, the international laws prohibit such activities and they should be stopped immediately.
