Facebook movie tops weekend box office

The Social Network – the movie about the founding of Facebook – attracted around 2.9 million unique visitors over the weekend and grabbed an estimated $23 million for tickets to emerge the king at the box office over the weekend.

According to Contactmusic,

The Sony/Screen Gems movie generated far more ticket sales than all the other three debuting movies combined, none of which even made the top five, as the overall box office dropped 10 percent from its year-ago total. Paramount Vantage,s Case 39 opened in seventh place with around $5.4 million. Overture,s Let Me In was close behind with $5.3 million. A fourth new entry, New Films Cinema,s Chain Letter , rolled out in 406 theaters but played to mostly empty seats. The film averaged just $363 per screen for the three days.

2. Legend of the Guardians The Owls of Ga’Hoole – $10.9 million;
3. Wall Street Money Never Sleeps – $10.1 million.
4. The Town – $10 million.
5. Easy A – $7 million.
6. You Again – $5.6 million.
7. Case 39 – $5.35 million.
8. Let Me In – $5.3 million.
9. Devil – $3.7 million.
10. Alpha and Omega – $3 million.
