Internationally known recording artist and drag queen, Kevin Aviance was robbed and beaten badly by four trash-talking men, in East Village on Saturday. Kevin, whose real name is Eric Sneed, posed for Homo Xtra magazine first, then went to Phoenix, a gay club on E. 13th St. While coming back, he desperately tried to hail a cab a few blocks up First Ave. about 1:30 a.m., those men started throwing debris on him. One of them punched his face, knocking him to the ground. Then they dragged him to the sidewalk and started kicking him.
Kevin says that they were not human and he felt that they would kill him. There were many people present there at that time but no body made an effort to help him. He suffered from several bruises and a broken jaw. He was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center later for treatment.
Four suspects have been arrested and charged with assault as hate crime. Kevin is highly disturbed with the incident, he disclosed that he has been doing the same thing since 15 years but people approach him with warmth, he was never harassed like this before.
Kevin was supposed to host the closing party for Gay Pride Week, which begins June 18, but now because of his injuries he won’t be able to make it to the event.
