With the 2008 presidential election only a couple of months away, I wonder if there is still time for a major controversy to arise like the “Cop Killer” controversy did back in 1992 that either the Democratic nominee or the Republican nominee can latch onto and take advantage of.

1992, a year that will forever live in infamy!

In 1992, rapper Ice-T teamed up with American heavy-metal band, Body Count and released the highly controversial song, “Cop Killer.”

Below are the lyrics to the song.

Cop killer! yeah!

I got my black shirt on.
I got my black gloves on.
I got my ski mask on.
This shits been too long.
I got my twelve gauge sawed off.
I got my headlights turned off.
Im bout to bust some shots off.
Im bout to dust some cops off.

Im a cop killer, better you than me.
Cop killer, fuck police brutality!
Cop killer, I know your familys grieving,
(fuck em!)
Cop killer, but tonight we get even, ha ha.

I got my brain on hype.
Tonight’ll be your night.
I got this long-assed knife.
And your neck looks just right.
My adrenalines pumpin.
I got my stereo bumpin.
I’m bout to kill me somethin.
A pig stopped me for nuthin!

Cop killer, better you than me.
Cop killer, fuck police brutality!
Cop killer, I know your mommas grieving,
(fuck her!)
Cop killer, but tonight we get even, yeah!

Die, die, die pig, die!

Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!

Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Yeah!

Cop killer, better you than me.
Im a cop killer, fuck police brutality!
Cop killer, I know your familys grieving,
(fuck em!)
Cop killer, but tonight we get even, ha ha ha ha, yeah!

Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!

Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Fuck the police!
Break it down.

Fuck the police, yeah!
Fuck the police, for darryl gates.
Fuck the police, for rodney king.
Fuck the police, for my dead homies.
Fuck the police, for your freedom.
Fuck the police, don’t be a pussy.
Fuck the police, have some muthafuckin courage.
Fuck the police, sing along.

Cop killer!
Cop killer!
Cop killer!
Cop killer!

Cop killer! whaddyou wanna be when you grow up?
Cop killer! good choice.
Cop killer! I’m a muthafuckin’
Cop killer!

Cop killer, better you than me.
Cop killer, fuck police brutality!
Cop killer, I know your mommas grieving,
(fuck her!)
Cop killer, but tonight we get even!

Oh the mayhem, protests, name-calling and outrage this song caused for Ice-T and Time Warner!

I’ll tell ya’ I wouldn’t have wanted to be in either one of their shoes in 1992!

Boy, did this controversy get ugly with a capital “U!”

The mere suggestion of killing a cop in a song had so many people up in arms!

Understandably so because approximately 144 cops had been killed in the line of duty back in 1991.

And it didn’t help Ice-T or Time Warner that they shipped the album out to retail outlets all over the United States in miniature body bags.

Ewww, gross!

What the hell were they thinking?

Some called it merely a “protest song” while others called it “hate music.”

Either way, battlelines were drawn, different sides were taken.

While many defended the album, song and the group’s first amendment right to freedom of speech and cited the fact that Ice-T had played a cop in the movie, New Jack City, many others including numerous police organizations denounced the song, “Cop Killer” as a song that will cause future crime and violence towards police officers.

Adding fuel to the fire, many politicians put their two cents in as well including former president George “Dubya” Bush and Dan Quayle who both publicly denounced the song and took sides with police organizations demanding that Time Warner withdraw the song and album.

And I wish that I could say that both of these politicians did it for only that reason but I would be straight up lying.

Dubya and Quayle also did it because it was an election year and they both wanted to garner more votes for themselves and their campaign.

So now that it is 2008 and an election year, i’m wondering if there will be another hot-button controversy that Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton or John McCain can latch onto and use to their advantage like Dubya and Quayle did back in 1992.

After all, it’s an election year in America, anything could happen!

God help us!
