Pop singer and songwriter George Michael has plead guilty to the charge of driving while unfit due to drugs.

The singer told the court he was very ashamed and that he had done something very stupid. He said he had committed the offence due to tiredness and prescribed drugs.

Michael said:

I did something very stupid and I am very ashamed since doing it. I really have been very distressed by this whole thing. I am perfectly aware that I did something very wrong and got into my car when I was unfit to drive. I was not in my normal physical state and I’m perfectly prepared to accept the correct punishment for that and I would have accepted it a long time ago.

The 43-year-old pop singer was arrested in Cricklewood, North London, on October 1 last year after motorists reported a car obstructing the road at traffic lights and on suspicion of being unfit to drive and for possession of a substance believed to be cannabis. He was later cautioned by police for possession of cannabis.

Michael has yet to be sentenced and faces a further hearing on May 30 for the court to consider his guilty plea, a Crown Prosecution Service spokeswoman said.

The charge carries a maximum six-month jail term and a fine of up to 5,000 pounds (9,968 U.S. dollars).

Michael has a hectic schedule in the coming days as he is due to perform at the new Wembley Stadium next month. He is also embarking on a European tour which begins in Denmark on May 18.
