Director Michael Mann may see the ‘Pirates of Caribbean‘ actor join forces with him for his next venture. Johnny Depp may be seen playing the role of John Dillinger a great bank robber in the early 30’s. The duo may pair with producer of ‘Miami Vice’ for this new project. The movie will be churned out by Universal Pictures with with Robet De Niro and Jane Rosenthal as the executive producers, and Kevin Misher as the producer.

This untitled project is reported to be based on the non-fiction work of Brian Burrough titled ‘Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34’. The movie will revolve around the outburst in crime during the Great Depression period. For all those who are anticipating the movie release, reports have it that the movie will start production in March 2008 and will be set at Chicago.

The facts in the Burrough’s book present the series of robberies that take place on July 22nd 1934 by Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde, and the notorious John Dillinger who was shot down by the FBI agents and police on that very day. The book also highlights the efforts of J. Edgar Hoover and F.B.I. to bring all the crime to a halt.

Reports have it that Depp is very keen to join this project as his other two movies have been postponed because of the writers strike. Depp was supposed to join the production of Warner Bros. Pictures’ ‘Shantaram’ followed with the production of The Rum Diary’. Classic movies have always been a specialty from the Hollywood bandwagon. This proposed project by Universal on the famous bank robber should definitely make its mark in the Box Office.

A versatile actor like Johnny Depp will add credibility to the character. His role in the Pirates franchise and ‘Sweeney Todd’ makes him a perfect choice to portray the role of the renowned robber. Fans and admirers of this perfect actor will be rearing to see him in yet another refined characterized role. Only time can tell if Johnny Depp agrees to join forces with the studio and will he justify the role.
