American stand-up comedian and actress Kathy Griffin established her high profile with humorous observation about her dating life. She then moved onto the much popular theme of mocking celebrities and has now shifted her focus to topics such as plastic surgery, scientology, drunkenness, substance abuse, snooty attitudes and eating disorders. But in her speech to the E! she stepped on a different and sensitive topic: Lord Jesus Christ.

Griffin won an Emmy for her performance in Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List this past weekend during the Creative Arts Emmy and stirred up a controversy with her speech.

She is supposed to have said:

A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. This award is my god now!

The Catholic League has picked the issue from thereon and has expressed its resentment at Griffin for disrespecting Jesus and the Church. The sensitive anti-defamation group has already asked E! that is to air the speech this Saturday to denounce Griffin’s obscene and blasphemous comments. E! says that it will censor this part of her speech when they go on air this weekend.

The 46-year old Griffin is not one who can stay far away from controversies. She kindled a major controversy in 2005 when made a joke during a E! televised event that child actress Dakota Fanning had entered rehab. That led to Griffin’s firing from hosting duties on E!’s red-carpet award show coverage. Griffin is also supposed to be banned from appearing on The Tonight Show and Late Show with David Letterman.

The new controversy that Kathy Griffin has invited upon herself could once again make her the headline topic for a few weeks. The Catholic Church in the USA is currently going through some difficult times: more and more allegations of sexual abuse by the priests are coming out of the closet and homosexuality still remains a bone of contension for the Church. People have already started voicing their discontent at the Catholic League’s treatment of Griffin after her apparently harmless comments about Lord Jesus.
