Mumbai University website gets hacked!!

Mumbai University has broken it’s own previous records of keeping the students suspended in the air and declaring the results as late as possible. It’s been ages since the TYBcom students wrote their last paper at the April 2010 examinations, but the results are still hovering somewhere high in the dark skies of Mumbai University.

The officials are too busy to even make some kind of concrete announcement regarding the date of the TYBcom results and what’s available for the eager students as of today is a disheartening mix of anxiety and rumors.

However, the latest stain in collar of Mumbai University is a bit too surprising. The official website of The University of Mumbai (www.mu.ac.in)has been hacked!! Given my limited exposure to the technical aspects of the web world, I may be at some fault, but from what I’ve experienced in these couple of days, I’m pretty sure that the website has been hacked.

As the latest rumor about the TYBcom results hit the town, a friend of mine anxiously gave me the good news and requested me to check her result online as she was experiencing some problem at accessing the results page due to heavy traffic. I said OK, and set out to check my luck with the clogged server.

As expected, the homepage popped up in a jiffy and I saw the familiar blinking announcement about some “NEW” result. The link took me to another page that confirmed (in the same blinking style) the existence of a new result in commerce stream.

A click on that link further took me to another page and confirmed the new results announced for TYBcom.

Again a click and again a new page, this time with header read “TYBcom: Seat no. 1 to 10000” with two special characters at the end.

I overlooked the last two special characters and rushed to click that link. Again, a new page opened with the header “Results for TYBcom. (Seat no. 1 to 10000) held on Apr 2010” and a submission box for the seat number.

I punched the seat no and hit the “GO” button. Well, I got the result. I WAS FOOLED ONCE AGAIN BY THE IRRESPONSIBLE MUMBAI UNIVERSITY STAFF! The page displayed in bold superscript “No Such Exam!!”

Take a good look at the last two pages and notice the difference in page layout. If this is not hacking then what the f@#k is this?! Has the severely under-staffed Mumbai University hired some special staff to create such sick and misleading links and harass the already-troubled students?? Whatever the case may be, but it highlights one important thing – Mumbai University’s highly-irresponsible behavior!
