Unparalleled political and economic reforms have already taken place in Myanmar since 2011, but the youth of this place are yet to get the fruit of these reforms. Majority of the individuals do not have the necessary skills, or get required training and employment opportunities which will help them to understand the benefits of these reforms. Till now the young generation has only heard about the reforms. They haven’t got any tangible results yet from these developments.
It is still not clear how foreign investment will help the young population. The funding from countries outside Myanmar has already started a variety of domestic industries like tourism, manufacturing, etc. It is to be seen whether the impatient young brigade resorts to crime or other illegal activities. Laws have been passed by the new government which condemns forced labor and permits workers to form labor unions. The education system is also going to be revamped under the new government. Steps are being taken to provide employment opportunities and training for skill development to the young people. Other foreign investors like Australian, Swedish and Japanese governments are donating in order to assist the Myanmar government.
Unemployment of the Youth- A Global Anxiety
One of the major areas of concern is unemployment, not only for the youth of Myanmar but also for other countries. This has become a reason for global anxiety. The Indian Labor Organization has approximated that among 160 million of jobless people, about 40 percent of individuals are between the age of 15 and 24. Among them around 85 percent of 1 billion come from developing countries. As per the agency report, the worldwide unemployment among young individuals is two to three times more than that among adults. It has also been reported that this generation is expected to get jobs with low packages or temporary jobs that don’t provide any benefit or security to the employees.
Solution for Myanmar
Experts suggest that this situation in Myanmar can be controlled if agencies or programs are created to provide jobs, vocational training and short-term training to the unemployed in order to build up their skill set. Even labor institutions can help in developing a labor force and that can sustain for a long period.
This will stop the young brigade to look for employment outside their country and the results of economic as well as political reforms can be really understood by them.
