Britney Spears may be the priziest of catch for any camera-wielding mercenary, but Nick Stern proved just the opposite with his unexpected gesture. The British photographer resigned from Splash, a Los Angeles-based, British-owned celebrity picture agency, to protest against the plight of the troubled singer, who is continuously being chased by paparazzi.

Nick’s decision came after Thursday’s incident involving a swarm of photographers who were in hot pursuit as Britney was being taken to the UCLA Medical Centre for the second time this month. In Nick’s own words,

Directly or indirectly, Britney is going to come to some horrific end, or a member of the public will. It’s not what’s being done, it’s the way it’s being done. As she continues to deteriorate psychologically, I just can’t see a positive way out.

The 43-year-old paparazzo further added,

The paps are completely out of control. It’s not unusual to have 20 or 30 cars pursuing her at any one time. It’s become acceptable to drive at 80mph down the wrong side of the street into oncoming traffic. I was horrified at what goes on. It’s so aggressive, there are fights and crashes and slashed tyres. I felt I needed to say something.

The drama involving Britney’s personal life has always been a hot favorite with the paparazzi and it will be no exxaggeration if we attribute Britney’s deteriorating condition to this deadly community (read celebrity photographers). It’s a shame that a person who is going through such a bad phase in her life is being subjected to such trauma by the same people who consider her as a source of their livelihood.

It takes a few drops of water to clean one’s conscience, but alas, we don’t find many who are ready to put themselves on the altar of self-interrogation. Nick’s action is an eye-opener for all those who still have some trace of humanity left in them.
