In a generous move the 82-year-old, Hollywood star Paul Newman is donating $10m (£5m) for the scholarship fund at the Kenyon College, US that he attended.

On May 28 the nine- time Oscar winner had announced his retirement from Hollywood stating that he is no longer able to perform to the best of his ability. He graduated in 1949 just after the World War II from Kenyon College, in Ohio with a degree in drama and economics.

The Academy Award and Golden Globe Award actor is also the founder of Newman’s Own, a food company, and donates all profits and royalties of this company to charity. He has donated more than $175m (£88.3m) to charity through this food company.

Recalling his days at the Ohio college as the happiest and most formative days of his life Newman said:

I believe strongly that we should be doing whatever we can to make all higher education opportunities available to deserving students. I hope others will support Kenyon in this manner.

The actor’s donation for college will find up to 20 students per year and they will be known as Newman’s Own scholars. Prior to these donations, Newman has made private donations to the college in the past along with Joanne Woodward, his wife since 1958.
