Pop stars and drug addiction: both seem to be made for each other. The latest celebrity to find himself entrapped in a drugs scandal is the much troubled Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty. He is just 28 but is already spoilt. A drug addict who has often been involved in driving offences, Doherty has escaped several times from prison sentence much due to the force of wealth and once again he has been let off the noose.
The latest episode to the ever increasing fiasco came on Friday when the rock star pleaded guilty to possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis. That resulted in the District Judge Davinder Lachhar handing out a an 18-month supervision order and a 12-month drug rehabilitation order. Doherty was also given a four-month custodial sentence suspended for two years, which essentially implies that one more offence and the rock star would be serving a prison sentence.
One can only pray that Pete Doherty starts learning now. In the past year, he has been visiting the court rooms far too frequently for anyone’s liking and the latest legal reprimand should import some sense in his still immature brain.
Pete Doherty was kicked out of The Libertines when he was discovered to be a heroin addict and his relationship with model Kate Moss is also believed to have broken down due to his drug addiction. But Doherty has failed to learn from such harrowing experience of the past.
At 28, Doherty still has enough time to turn over a new leaf. But as so often in the case of such spoilt, rich young men, a considerable period of time spent in jail is the only solution.
