Prison Riot leaves 14 Dead in Matamoros

A riot between inmates in the Matamoros, Tamaulipas prison resulted in the death of 14 federal prisoners on Saturday August 7, 2010.

The state police chief, Jose Ives Soberon Tijerina, said that the prisoners who died were all new transfers.

He explained that the inmates died from stab wounds in various parts of the body.

The riot was reported at 5:00 pm Saturday, when two groups of inmates clashed.

Various police forces were called in to aid the prison guards in efforts to restore order at the Matamoros Center for Implementation of Sanctions(Cedes). The deceased inmates had been admitted on July 29th.

In October 2008 there was a riot at the Center for Social Rehabilitation of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, in which 21 inmates died and 12 more prisoners were seriously wounded.

On that occasion, the bodies of prisoners were burned.

That riot led to the escape of 17 inmates, 13 of them were under federal jurisdiction and the rest were state prisoners. Investigations uncovered four guards who allegedly facilitated the escape of the prisoners through the front door. To date, the whereabouts of all the escapees is unknown.
