Bagged Cole slaws with sell by dates of November 9 and November 11, 2006, manufactured, packaged and distributed by the Boston Salads & Provisions Co. has been recalled for reported contamination of the salad with listeria monocytogenes. Facts point out a previous warning issued by the FDA to the Boston Salads & Provisions Co. concerning unsanitary conditions in their seafood plants. However, there are no evidences suggesting that unsanitary conditions in the seafood plants might be a possible cause of contamination, but possibilities of such a contamination exists.

There are claims of monitoring of Cole slaw from manufacturing to the distribution stage, yet the contamination shows that the Company had not been careful enough in maintaining hygiene while processing the salads. There have been no reports of recurring illnesses due to the contamination from Cole slaw.

Consumers are expected to maintain caution with the processed foods, purchased at the outset of a string of E coli outbreaks. As far as processed food manufacturers are concerned, FDA should take strict action against unhygienic or careless processing of foodstuff to prevent contamination related contingencies in future. Apart from everything else the essence of all the food-related contaminations poses only one question: Are processed foods safe for consumption?
