Status of women in changing Bihar Political senario

The political situation in Bihar five years ago, did not give enough reasons for women in Bihar to celebrate Women’s Day with so much zeal, the women of Bihar are more empowered than any other states of India. The new regime has given enough reasons to smile and celebrate their freedom. Tormented and subjugated throughout the RJD’s regime has come to an end, women have fought their way through exploitation, harassment, and have managed to secure their rights in the public domain. Several milestones have been achieved in terms of education, freedom of choice and liberty, equality etc. With growing literacy and financial independence women feel more empowered today to assert their right to a life of dignity and self worth.
The International Women’s Day celebrated on 8th March is a universal day for all women around the world. It endows them with a sense of honour, dignity and self respect for being the person that they are. This day marks a celebration of the economic, social, cultural and political achievements made by women over the years.
The origin of a child is a mother, a woman. She shows a man what loving, caring and sharing is all about” said Anamika Roy, a home maker. She further added “Indeed a woman’s essence lies in her innate ability to care, love and sacrifice for the other. She plays an all-enveloping character of a mother, daughter, wife and sister as a friend, nurturer, guide and partner from time to time. Emotional and vulnerable, sometimes erratic, sometimes serene, she displays a wonderful range of emotions from being patient to being extremely courageous in times of crisis.” When asked about how the situation in Bihar has changed for women she said “Bihar has now become a women state with women being active in all spheres be it socially, economically or socially, they are ready to change for good”.
Garima Anand, a development sector employee said “Women has witnessed a tremendous change in the attitude of people in the last five years, women are being respected in all castes”. “When I completed my graduation my mother was not ready to allow me to work in Bihar because of the fear as the situation was totally a contrast to today’s time” said Garima. She further added “my nature of work includes lot of travelling to remote areas which became a major concern to my family then, but now I feel very secured and travel alone to all remote areas fearlessly, even in the naxal belt. I can say that I have been a witness to drastic positive change. I have seen Bihar changing and women being empowered more and more.”
Renu Ranjan, mother of two daughters said “Earlier when my daughters went out and did not return at the said time, my anxiety doubled as the situation was not bad but worst”. When asked about the change in situation she said “Now the situation has completely changed; now they are also fearless and so we are. There are days when they out till 9 pm, there is no fear of being abducted or raped.”
Swati Verma, an engineer in Pune said “I was allowed to travel all alone all over India, but the moment travelling to Bihar came I was always guided by somebody because travelling alone in Bihar’s train became a matter of major concern not only for my family but relatives all over”. On being asked about what change has she witnessed in five years she said “Women can be seen travelling alone now even around 10 pm, which actually leaves me aghast, earlier one could see a self imposed curfew in Bihar after the dawn. The picture has completely changed the women here are more empowered than any developed state of India”. There has been tremendous rise in the working women in the past 5 years; they are walking neck to neck with the opposite sex.
The development can easily be seen in remote villages of Bihar with the help of various government programmes on women empowerment. Reena Devi of Serghati village in Gaya said “earlier I was confined to the four walls of my house but now with development and empowerment programmes I have been educated about my rights which has given me a chance to have my own opinion and say, I now freely roam around and attend Self help group meetings which earlier was a dream for women like me”. She further added “this was the first time I casted my vote fearlessly”.
Women in Bihar now have every reason to celebrate The Women’s Day, with enthusiasm, they are no more subdued!
