Schiaccia Briaca: Cake drunk to give you sustenance

Europe: Elba,Italy

schriabacaHey this rare dessert belongs to one of seven Tuscan Archipelago islands in the Mediterranean. This is a typical dessert from the island Elba and it is called as Schiaccia Briaca, meaning ‘drunk cake’, where the cake is drunk with Aleatico sweet wine. Schiaccia Briaca is made by kneading flour, white sugar, yeast and warm water and leaving it overnight. It is further kneaded with wine, sultanas and dried nuts and then it is topped with pine nuts before baking it in hot oven for 45 minutes.

This dessert has a red-rosy crust and a strong flavor due to the presence of robust Aleatico sweet wine. As per historical records this dessert was given to those who traveled by sea, to give them energy and it was mostly served in the time of Christmas. This dessert is easy, rare and stands pretty…I am yet to taste it to tell you of the taste.
