In the hunt for more sensational news to increase their TRP’s, Indian news channels have metamorphosed into horror movies. But with a difference; they still like keep the tag truth with their shows. The sellers of fear have made news by crossing every boundary of morality and duty while making their ‘news’.
It was high time for them to get rewarded, other then their TRP’s. And they have bagged the best; a life. A life of sixteen-year-old, who had bestowed her trust in them.
Chhaya committed suicide after watching TV reports that a physics experiment could bring about the end of the world. She poisoned herself at her home in the central city of Indore, after being terrorized by the “world would end” when the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was switched on theory; popularized by the apocalypse-selling Indian news channel.
Especially regional news channel, in their hound for more eyeballs, try to present every news as it is the most exclusive and significant. And how do they do it; by selling every piece of conspiracy or doomsday crap. News is boring but not when it can be you in the victim’s place. From here starts the pyramid of lies and deceit.
The tag of news channel stops the viewer from discarding their claptrap as rubbish. Having the lower class as their target viewership further decreases the chances of being caught. Without any kind of corroboration they discuss the most weird ideas and refurbish it as true. No matter whether the subject is science or spirits; they are experts on everything. To strengthen further their crap they bring ‘experts’, who have doctorates in doctoring the point. They are as neutral as Osama bin Laden, and as true as night.
The government of India was disturbed in its sleep when in an attempt of having “exclusive” sting operation, a news channel’s correspondent engineered it. The poor school teacher was branded as a whore, and was publicly beaten by gullible mob. The trauma of the victim got ‘justice’ when the correspondent lost its job; and the news channel continued. Of course, sting operations also lost their credibility, making it out of fashion, and government resumed its sleep.
So they came up with ideas. They started having more ‘news’ on supernatural activities; having stories about Aliens’; especially made-for-them scoop from actors; and least, but not the last, coverage about real political news. They took videos from Hollywood sci-fi movies, presented them in a news format. And people bought it!
By growing viewership their lies justified their act. People wanted to hear all that, and they were just catering to a need. Government didn’t do anything as it didn’t care; on the other hand it was happy till the news channel stayed away from it; you look the other way at my misdemeanors and I will look the other way at yours. And biggest of all everyone has a right to speak, even if there is no iota of truth in it.
The more I see Indian news channel the more I feel that right of freedom of speech should be won, not given.
