A Khap Mahapanchayat today threatened to intensify the agitation for a constitutional amendment banning same gotra marriages, saying such weddings went against traditions and social norms.

The Sarvjatiya Sarvkhap Mahapanchayat here attended by Khap representatives from different castes vowed that their stir will continue until the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 was amended.

It passed a resolution condemning Union Ministers opposed to the demand and lavished praise on leaders who favoured the caste councils and endorsed their demand for ban on same gotra marriages.
It also decided to hold a Mahapanchayat soon at Meham in Rohtak district to work out an agitational strategy to press for the demand.

The Khap leaders are determined to save the age old Indian culture, where same-gotra marriages are prohibited. As per Hinduism, people belonging to the same gotra are considered to be siblings. Hence, they demand to amend the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 and impose ban on the same-gotra weddings. However on the other hand there are many couples who belong to the same gotra. What will be the effect on their marriage and children? Do you think Khap leaders’ demand is justified and the ban should be imposed?
