Spy movies of Bollywood

Behind the veil of romance and emotional drama, Bollywood has churned out some cool and sleek spy movies too. Though these movies are not in the same genre as Bond and Bourne flicks produced in Hollywood, some of them are definitely entertaining and watchable. Agent Vinod, starring Saif Ali Khan is set to release in March and trade pundits believe that the success of this movie could start a new phase of spy movies in Bollywood. Here is the list of top ten spy movies produced by Bollywood.

Agent Vinod

Year: 2012

Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor

Produced by Saif Ali Khan himself, Agent Vinod is directed by S Ragahavan. The trailers of this film look very promising and it is expected that this film will set the screen on fire. Saif plays the role of protagonist, who is on a mission to save the world from terrorists.This film is seen as Bollywood’s answer to Hollywood’s most famous spy, James Bond.

Jewel Thief

Year: 1967

Cast: Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand, Vyjayanthimala, Tanuja, Ram Sethi

Starring two of Bollywood’s biggest stars of that time, the Jewel Thief is regarded by many as one of the best spy movies made in Bollywood. Dev Anand plays the role of Vinay, who is a happy-go-lucky person but mistaken for a jewel thief by the police. Vinay tries to prove his innocence by teaming up with the police. He enters the gang of the jewel thief, played superbly by Ashok Kumar, to clear his name.

The Hero: Love Story of a Spy

Year: 2003

Cast: Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Amrish Puri, Kabir Bedi

In this spy thriller, the original He-Man of Bollywood, Sunny Deol is a RAW agent, who use to train ordinary villagers to prevent terrorist activities across India-Pakistan border. Preity Zinta played the role of a village girl who gets trained by Sunny Deol but falls in love with him during the course of training. Amrish Puri and Kabir Bedi plays the role of Pakistani agents, who are hell bent on creating trouble in India.

Mukhbir

Year: 2008

Cast: Sameer Dattani, Om Puri, Sunil Shetty, Sushant Singh, Rahul Dev, Raima Sen

Directed by Mani Shankar, this spy movie will always be remembered for its authentic portrayal of the life of a Mukhbir (Informer in English). Samir Dattani played the title role. It is said that Mani asked Dattani to spend a night in jail and spend some time with underworld people to play his role in a better manner.

Farz

Year: 1967

Cast: Jeetendra, Babita,

Directed by Ravee Kant, Farz was one of the finest spy movie of its time. Jeetendra and Babita played the lead role in this film. Jeteendra is Agent 116, who has been asked by the head of the CID to find out the real killer of another CID agent. During his mission, Jeetendra meets Sunita (Babita) and falls in love. The film takes an interesting twist when Jeetendra learns that Sunita’s father is the man who has killed the CID agent.

Yakeen

Year: 1969

Cast: Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore

One of the best spy movie ever made in Bollywood, Yakeen features Dharmendra in a double role and Sharmila Tagore plays his love interest. Dharmendra works in a confidential scientific mission. One fine day, his boss is murdered and police starts suspecting him of killing his boss. Family drama and romance dominates the first half, while espionage takes centrestage after interval.

Golden Eyes: Secret Agent 077

Year: 1968

Cast: Sailash Kumar, Helen and Mumtaz

Directed by Anil Sharma, ‘Golden Eyes: Secret Agent 077’ turned out to be a comedy film than a spy thriller. The film has many villains and action scenes every minute or so and yes, it has lots of skin show as well. Lack of well written script script and good screenplay was its major drawback. Even the presence of Mumtaz and Helen failed to save this film from sinking at the box-office without a trace.

Aankhen

Year: 1968

Cast: Dharmendra, Mala Sinha, Mehmood, Nazir Husain, Jeevan, Sajjan

Directed by one of the Bollywood’s most famous directors, Ramanand Sagar, Ankhen is without doubt one of most successful spy films made in Bollywood. Dharmendra plays the role of an undercover spy, who is on a mission to prevent Assam from terrorist attacks. He meets the dangerous ‘Madam’ in Assam and then brings her down. Lalita Pawar plays the role of ‘Madam’.

Do Jasoos

Year: 1975

Cast: Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar

Dharamchand (Raj Kapoor) and Karamchand (Rajendra Kumar) are two detectives who are on a mission to find the missing daughter(Bhavana Bhatt) of a millionaire. The girl is the eye-witness to a murder and the duo wants to save him. Several comic twists and turns ensue because of a case of mistaken identity.

Spy in Rome

Year: 1968

Cast: Dev Kumar, Jaymala, K N Singh

An Indian scientist finds a formula to youth, while an Italian scientist has developed the formula for the human brain. The Italian scientist based in Rome wants to use the formula of the Indian scientist to create the perfect human but the Indian scientist refuses to give him his formula. The Italian gets angry and hires professionals to kidnap the Indian. Agents XX7 and 005 are asked by the Indian Secret Service to bring back the Indian scientist.
