The above sample of a pig muscle in a Petri dish is a witness to the first-time efforts made by Henk Haagsman, a professor of meat sciences at Utrecht University, and his Dutch colleagues to grow artificial pork meat from pig stem cells. The cultured meat will undergo a complete process of muscle-tissue engineering, as shown below, to produce self-assembled muscles of pork.
Research says that the biggest challenge is to produce meat in massive scale for various meat-based products. However, if the researchers can install the required bio-reactors for producing the meat sheets then the environmentalist can be happy with reduced slaughters. Moreover, the research asserts that this technology would revolutionize meat production for processed meats in minced meat suitable for burgers, sausages and pizza toppings.
The consumers can enjoy what the researchers now claim to deliver them in a highly processed meat tailored to give health. As far as the meat-eaters are concerned, they can rest assured with the availability of the so-called ‘natural’ juicy steak for a couple of years from now.
